Top 5 golf movies - Drama

All these movies I think are worth a watch during lockdown, ranked 5 to 1.

5. Dead Solid Perfect
This movie starring Randy Quaid is all about life on the pro tours. It’s based on the book of the same name by Dan Jenkins, a book that many consider the best golf novel ever written. Quaid is a struggling pro golfer chasing the dream

4. The Legend of Bagger Vance (2000)
Stars: Will Smith, Matt Damon, Charlize Theron, Bruce McGill
Matt Damon plays a down-and-out golfer who attempts to recover his game and his life with help from a mystical caddy, played by Will Smith. This film is a well-made period drama from Robert Redford featuring two movie stars (three if you include Charlize Theron) doing what they do best. And if you’ve seen it before, this is one legend worth repeating.

3. Bobby Jones: Stroke of Genius (2004)
PG | 120 min | Biography, Drama, Romance
Stars: Jim Caviezel, Claire Forlani, Jeremy Northam, Malcolm McDowell
Bobby Jones had a lasting legacy both on and off the course having founded the Augusta National Golf Club and co-founding the Masters Tournament. He retired at only 28 after a decade of dominance, winning all four major golf tournaments (of that time) in a single calendar year having felt trapped by the pressures of championship golf.
It’s Jones’ quick rise to dominance and just-as-quick retirement from the sport that is chronicled in Bobby Jones: Stroke of Genius. Part exploration of sports history as Jones took the golfing world by storm during the 1920s and part examination of the man himself and how his intensity drove him towards perfectionism but also negatively impacted those around him, Stroke of Genius is a tale of the pressures of playing at the highest level and how they inevitably bleed over into personal relationships.

2. Tommy’s Honour (2017)
Stars: Benjamin Wainwright Peter Mullan Jack Lowden Sam Neill
In St Andrews, Scotland in 1866, 15-year-old Tommy Morris is an avid golfer like his legendary and pioneering father, Tom Morris. “Old Tom” is greens-keeper for The Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews, as well as the town’s club- and ball-maker. He is the two-time winner of the first major golf tournament, The Open Championship, which was founded in 1860 by James Ogilvie Fairlie, Tom’s mentor. He also established golf’s standard of 18 holes per round.
Tommy soon outshines his father, winning The Open three times in a row while still in his teens. The “dashing young man of golf”, he draws flocks of spectators to the sport and becomes its first touring professional.
Father and son repeatedly clash over the unwritten rules of social class, and this culminates when Tommy marries his sweetheart Meg, a woman of lower standing with a shameful secret in her past.
It is directed by Sean Connery’s son Jason.

1. The Greatest Game Ever Played (2005)
Stars: Shia LaBeouf, Stephen Dillane, Elias Koteas, James Paxton
In the 1913 US Open, 20-year-old Francis Ouimet played golf against his idol, 1900 US Open champion, Englishman Harry Vardon.
American golfer Francis Ouimet won the U.S. Open way back in 1913 at the age of just 20. Ouimet is best remembered for an iconic photograph with his caddie for the open, then 10-year-old Eddie Lowery. Can you imagine a 20 year old with a 10 year old caddie playing the US Open in 2021!!
